SPODE STAFFORDSHIRE BLUE & WHITE CASTLE  OR GATE OF SAN SEBASTIAN PATTERN PEARLWARE PLATE C.1806-15
Spode Staffordshire Blue & White Castle or Gate of San Sebastian pattern peaerlware c.1806-15
"A beautiful blue and white Staffordshire pearlware display plate for the dresser or wall. A fine example of Spode's Castle or Gate of San Sebastian pattern. It looks so good on display with other fine antiques and will enhance any collection of English pottery." Antiques Expert Hamilton Bear.

References: This pattern is one of the Spode Italian Series designs and is based on two prints found in Merigot's Views of Rome and its Vicinity 1797-9. One print is "The Gate of Sebastian" the other "Ponte Molle". It is believed to have been introduced in 1806. An identical example is illustrated in Blue and White Transfer Ware 1780-1840, A.W. Coysh plate 104 page 77.
Marks: Characteristic Spode printed mark and impressed marks as illustrated.
Dimensions: width 250 mm max.
Condition: In brilliant condition. No significant damage or chips or restoration.  Viewed in angled light there are several light knife-scratch marks to glaze and a small patch (to the right top of the right gatehouse tower) where the clear glaze has not adhered to the pottery in firing.  This is difficult to spot and does not detract from a good early piece.
