BRISTOL (TEMPLE BACK) DELFT TINGLAZED POLYCHROME DISH CHINESE FIGURE & BAMBOO TREE PATTERN C.1740-50
Bristol (Temple Back) Delft Tinglazed polychrome dish Chinese Figure and Bamboo Tree pattern c.1740-50

"Great genuine antique English pottery delft style with this original, eighteenth century, tinglazed earthenware, Chinese Figure and Bamboo Tree pattern Bristol delftware dish. This well potted and skillfully decorated polychrome English delft plate dates circa 1740 to 1750 and was made at the Bristol Temple Back, Thomas Cantle works. The subtle muted colouring of purple-manganese, green, yellow and blue against a soft sheen bluish-green base are a real delight. A rare surviving example worthy of the best antique pottery collection." Antiques Expert Hamilton Bear.

References: Identification and attribution of English Delft or tin-glazed earthenware, to specific areas and maker, is always difficult. Noteworthy therefore to find a surviving large example with comparative authoritative reference examples in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection. Several identical  Bristol Temple Bank, Thomas Cantle dishes with this pattern are  illustrated in the published V&A collection catalogue: Michael Archer, Delftware The Tin-glazed Earthenware of the British Isles (London: The Stationary Office, 1997) Catalogue reference B 206-208 page 210-11.
Marks: none.
Dimensions: width 234 mm max.
Condition: excellent condition for display. There are no edge chips, cracks, or restoration or rubbing to painted decoration. There are two short faint surface hairline scratches, one forked,  to to the thick glaze which can just be made out. These do not penetrate  to the pottery and are not dissimilar to surface crazing. Both are easily missed and do not detract from the overall decorative qualities of the piece.
