VICTORIAN ENGLISH MAJOLICA LARGE PLANTER VASE PROBABLY BY MINTON OR HOLDCROFT C.1870-85
"A striking English majolica large footed planter vase dating from around 1870-85. Beautifully decorated in rich majolica glazes - with applied relief decoration of a Classical head of a maiden, a cherub and crane like birds, set against a deep majolica blue glaze background. It is complimented by the Greek key border to the rim and substantial ring handles. English majolica pottery is often known by the generic term Minton Majolica after Mintons who 'invented' it. Attribution is difficult with Victorian majolica wares as so much of it was left unmarked by the makers. This quality piece is probably the work of Mintons or Joseph Holdcroft who made stylistically similar copies of some of Mintons best designs." Antiques Expert Hamilton Bear.

References: For a similar piece by Minton see Karmason and Stacke, Majolica a Complete History and Illustrated Survey page 38 plate top left.
Dimensions: height 260 mm max. width 300 mm max.
Marks: none.
Condition: In excellent condition as illustrated for such a large and fragile piece. Condition report: Most surviving planter vases have suffered some damages through use. There are two short overlapping hairlines to a small section of the pink interior rim. These go through to the front but are virtually 'lost' in the blue background. A further curved hairline to the inside base is again quite difficult to spot on the outside. This large piece is very robust and not significantly weakened in our view by either area of typical minor damages. A good example.
