FINE REGENCY ENGLISH PORCELAIN DERBY PORTER MUG, PAINTED FLORAL GROUP, ATTRIBUTED TO EDWIN STEELE C.1820
"A very fine Regency porcelain Derby porter mug circa 1820. An exquisite hand painted cabinet piece, most likely painted by talented Derby artist Edwin Steele. Study this flower painting closely and enjoy the classic Regency still life arrangement: an elaborate, exquisite grouping of summer flowers on a stone slab or plinth. A very special piece of English porcelain. It looks so good on display with other fine antiques and will enhance any collection of English pottery." Antiques Expert Hamilton Bear.

References: a similar porter mug attributed to Edwin Steele is illustrated in Derby Porcelain by J. Twitchett plate 333 page 246. For signed examples of works by Edwin Steele see, Crown Derby Porcelain, F. Brayshaw Gilhespy (F. Lewis 1951) plate 73 fig 132 and fig 133, from the Derby Museum collection.
Marks: As illustrated, the crown and cross batons with dots over D in iron red.
Dimensions: this porter mug measures height 116 mm max. width 165 mm max.
Condition: Most surviving Bloor Derby porter mugs have suffered from visually disfiguring body cracks and hairlines through use. This piece is such a beautiful display item as it has been professionally restored, to a very high standard, to preserve the aesthetic quality of original decoration and form for future generations. Restoration appears to be to a tight forked hairline crack across the base of the mug and a number of similar body cracks. This is very easily missed and only fully apparent viewed with transmitted light, from a very strong source, held directly against the item. There is also typical minor rubbing wear to gilding and slight wear to enamels.
