ELTON WARE HAND MADE & DECORATED BRITISH ART POTTERY JUG, ELTON POTTERY BY WILLIAM FISHLEY HOLLAND C.1920-22

"A stylish Elton Ware English art pottery hand crafted vase. This is one of the last pieces produced at the Clevedon Elton Sunflower Pottery. Almost certainly this pot was thrown by the talented ceramic artist William Fishley Holland who joined the pottery after the death of Sir Edmund Elton. The beautiful incised decoration is also the work of Holland. The distinctive Liberty Green colouring suggests it was intended to mirror the fashion for Liberty of London, the leading arts and crafts retailer of the period who may have originally sold this piece." References: William Fishley Holland was a particularly noteworthy 20th century studio art potter for many years. He joined the Elton Pottery from the Devon Fremington Pottery family. The style/shape and decoration of this wonderful jug is very similar to some Fremington wares. William Fishley Holland set up his own pottery opposite Clevedon Court when the Elton pottery closed in 1922.

Dimensions: height 162 mm max.

Marks: Rare late Elton marks with cross as illustrated.

Condition: Excellent with no chips, cracks or restoration to pottery. Two tiny surface pin-prick marks to glaze that are almost 'invisible'; one small flat glaze flake to rim top. These have no effect on the decorative/display qualities of this piece.
